The Secret Garden - Missoula Children’s Theatre

Bring your children or grandchildren to be a part of The Secret Garden, an original Missoula Children’s Theatre musical that is a joyful story of hope, celebration and all good things in life.  Mistress Mary Quite Contrary journeys from India to her uncle’s home in England.  Along the way she befriends hilarious Canadian Geese and colorful Giant Bugs that Rock! She learns to appreciate everything around her, including the Moor Animals and the helpful Fireflies. Soon the garden blooms again with love and nurturing, and so do the 50-60 local children that participate in the wonderful week of auditions, rehearsals and performance with Missoula Children’s Theatre. The holiday season begins with the UW-Whitewater Music Department’s annual Gala Holiday Concert.  A showcase of nearly all of the Department’s ensembles and small groups – this concert benefits the music student scholarship fund.  The program provides a variety of holiday sounds from Gospel to Jazz with popular classical favorites.  Arrive early to enjoy the small student ensembles perform throughout the lobby and the Fern Young Terrace or to bid on items in the silent auction.

It begins by auditioning local youth and ends in one amazing week with an hour long musical adaptation of The Tortoise Versus The Hare. The annual race between the Reptiles and the Mammals is about to take place and we see there is more than sporting rivalry between the brown and green animals. Loyalties to the specific colors create a real animosity until a tiny bunny is lost in the wilds of Tornado Gulch. Color is forgotten as the mammals and reptiles join in search and the wisdom of the old tortoise reminds the cocky hare that “color is just a color – it’s just decorated skin.”  Catch this new twist on a classic tale!

The production is led by the UW-Whitewater Theatre/Dance Department and directed by Professor James Butchart. Our Town explores the traditional, rural American community through the budding romance of Emily Webb and George Gibb. The subtleties of daily life and family bring profound meaning to the larger questions of love, marriage, death and eternity This Pulitzer Prize winning play and Wilder’s masterpiece is an American treasure that should not be missed.
