Overture’s wildly popular Rising Stars program has officially returned for a second year, with registration open today and the first audition set for March 28.
“We’ve always known there is amazing talent right here in the Madison area, talent that deserves a stage and a spotlight,” said Overture’s Vice President of Programming and Community Engagement Tim Sauers. “We expected to find some real rising stars and that’s exactly what we found, and we have every reason to believe we’ll find some more this year.”
In its first year, Rising Stars attracted about 300 people to six auditions, and an all-star panel of judges narrowed the field down to 24 bands, singers, dancers and other talented performers who put on a one-of-a-kind revue show in September. Overture officials expect even more acts to audition this year, partly because the number of audition dates has gone from six to eight and because there will be more awareness of the opportunity.
“There’s excitement about performing at Overture Center,” said Sauers. “We love being able to search our community for talented performers and then showcase them in the Capitol Theater. Last year, many of our groups entered the competition for that opportunity.”
Auditions will be held throughout the spring and summer starting in late March, and participants selected by the all-star panel of judges will be invited to The Callbacks at Overture on August 29, 2015, to vie for a spot in The Finals on September 19, 2015. Anyone age 6 or older is welcome to audition, including those who auditioned but did not win prizes last year.
Auditions will be classified into the categories of Music, Dance and Variety, and within each category, performers will be divided into age divisions of 6-12, 13-18 and Over 18. Prizes will be awarded in each age division in each category, for a total of nine category awards.
In addition, a grand winner will earn the opportunity to perform as part of Overture’s 2016/17 subscription season.
“No animals, no glitter, and keep it under three minutes. Those are pretty much the rules,” Sauers said.
Registrations will only be accepted online through overturecenter.org/risingstars, where you can also find complete rules and audition information. The first 50 registrants at each audition site will be accepted.
Bands must audition at Full Compass on July 18.
Dancers are encouraged to audition at the Stoughton Center for the Performing Arts on April 18 or the Madison Ballet School on May 16.
Any circus-style acts are encouraged to audition at Circus World Museum on July 11.
