Madison Early Music Festival Shakespeare 400: An Elizabethan Celebration Concerts and Events – July 9-16

Madison, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Madison Arts Institute announces the 17th annual Madison Early Music Festival (MEMF), Shakespeare 400: An Elizabethan Celebration. MEMF takes place from July 9-16, 2016 in the Mosse Humanities Building (455 N. Park St.) on the UW-Madison campus, and is an Affiliate Partner of Shakespeare in Wisconsin 2016.

Commemorating the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare and celebrating the glorious 45-year reign of Queen Elizabeth I, MEMF 2016 celebrates the musical legacy of these two titans in a full week of Elizabethan history and culture through concerts, lectures, films, classes and dances with some of the world’s finest artists. Featured concert artists include New York Polyphony, The Newberry Consort, The Baltimore Consort and “Sonnets 400” with musicians Grant Herreid, Priscilla Herreid and Charles Weaver along with local actor Michael Herold.

The Madison Early Music Festival is internationally recognized as a top early music festival that features music from Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque eras from award winning performers and distinguished faculty. Unique to MEMF is the culminating All-Festival Concert, which features participants performing together on a stage with faculty.

MEMF Concert Series

The MEMF Festival Concert Series features four Guest Ensemble Concerts, two MEMF Participant Concerts, and a culminating All-Festival Concert. All evening concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. in Mills Concert Hall (Humanities Building, 455 N. Park St.) with free pre-concert lectures at 6:30 p.m. next door in the Elvehjem Building’s lower level lecture hall, L140.

Tickets are $25 ($10 student) for individual concerts or $90 for a pass for all concerts – unless noted otherwise.

Vocal Ensemble New York Polyphony’s program “Tudor City,” which spent 3 weeks in the Billboard Top 10, features music of the church with the sacred music of Thomas Tallis and William Byrd, Christopher Tye and Walter Lambe.

Sunday, July 10

The Newberry Consort, a violin string band with soprano Ellen Hargis, creates a historical soundtrack to the 1912 silent movie “Les amours de la reine Élisabeth (The loves of Queen Elizabeth)” which starred Sarah Bernhardt as Queen Elizabeth I.

The Baltimore Consort presents “The Food of Love: Songs, Dances, and Fancies for Shakespeare” with songs and consort music from Shakespeare’s plays.

Friday, July 15

MEMF Participant Concert

Festival workshop participants perform in ensembles that have been coached by faculty artists throughout the week of the festival. No pre-concert lecture.

Sonnets 400

Mills Concert Hall, 455 N. Park St. | 7:30 p.m. | $25/$10

Sonnets 400” features forty of Shakespeare’s sonnets for recital, interspersing the passionate and glorious verses with selections from Anthony Holborne’s beautiful music. Musicians Priscilla Herreid, Grant Herreid, and Charles Weaver are joined by actor Michael Herold, a Madison favorite.

Saturday, July 16

MEMF Advanced Loud Band and Early Opera Workshop Concert

Music Hall, 925 Bascom Mall | 2:00 p.m. | Free

Participants from the Advanced Loud Band Intensive will perform historically based reed and brass ensemble music by Byrd, Weelkes and Tomkins, as well as selections from the Fitzwilliam and Tegian Manuscripts. Participants from the Early Opera Workshop will perform excerpts from “The Fairy Queen,” Henry Purcell’s semi-opera based on William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” No pre-concert lecture.

MEMF All-Festival Concert

Mills Concert Hall, 455 N. Park St. | 7:30 p.m. | $25/$10

The All-Festival Concert will feature MEMF students and faculty performing large scale instrumental and choral works in a new program, “Shakespeare’s Musical World: A Day in the Life of Elizabethan London,” created and directed by Grant Herreid exclusively for the Madison Early Music Festival.

Additional events during the week include the MEMF Dance featuring music and dance instruction on Thursday, July 14 at 7:00 p.m. in the Harrison Parlor at Lathrop Hall (321 University Ave.) on the UW-Madison campus. Tickets are $10 each (cash only) and are available at the door on the night of each event.
