MTM, a professional musical theatre company focusing on lesser-known works, has announced La Cage Aux Folles as the first show of its 2016 season. The production will be performed at Five Nightclub, 5 Applegate Court, from February 4-13, 2016. Tickets will go on sale January 1, 2016.
La Cage Aux Folles is the Tony winning Broadway musical based on the French film of the same name. The story is of a middle aged couple, Georges and Albin, who own a drag club on the 1970s French riviera, where Albin is the star. They have a son named Jean-Paul, the result of a brief relationship Georges had with a woman in his youth. When Jean-Paul becomes engaged to the daughter of a conservative politician, the family is forced to feign “normal” for an evening, with hilarious and touching results. La Cage won multiple Tony Awards in 1982 and again in its 2010 Broadway revival. The music and lyrics by Jerry Herman feature the rousing “The Best of Times” and the heart wrenching anthem “I Am What I Am.” La Cage was also the basis for the 1996 film “The Birdcage” starring Robin Williams and Nathan Lane.
The Madison production will star Robert A. Goderich as Albin. Goderich is a well known face to the Madison community, having performed frequently in Madison, including recently singing the role of Pirelli in Madison Opera’s Sweeney Todd.
La Cage will be directed by Catie O’Donnell, with music direction by Kevin Blakeslee and choreography by Marsha Heuer.
Founded in 2005 by Meghan Randolph, MTM (Music Theatre of Madison) focuses on lesser-known musical theatre pieces illustrating thought-provoking subject matter. La Cage will be the company’s 25th full scale musical theatre production. MTM will present two additional musicals in 2016: A Madison premiere and a Midwest premiere.
