Overture’s Playhouse Gallery to Showcase Tribute to ‘Furry Friends’

by | Apr 14, 2016 | 0 comments

MADISON, Wis. – Best in Show: Dogs in Art will be featured from April 30 – June 19, 2016 in the Playhouse Gallery, the long corridor in Overture Center’s lower level across from The Playhouse Theater and adjacent to the Rotunda Stage.

In this canine-themed exhibition, a group of assembled artists explore the multifaceted relationship between dogs and humans.   The eight artists, KT Arneson, Birgit Bach, Audrey Christie, Heidi Hankley, Ruth Hansen, Gretchen Olson, Jaroslava Sobiskova, and Ann Wichmann, use a variety of media, including paint, watercolor, sculpture, tile, and print to showcase the various ways in which artists can use different media to depict the same subject: the beloved companion which quickly becomes an inseparable part of families, woven into the fabric of daily life.

Dogs, with a wag of their tail, open the door to individuals’ homes and hearts. The incredible number and variety of dog breeds offer plenty of choices when searching for a pet.  It is not just their fuzzy coats, big floppy ears and gorgeous eyes; it is their unique personalities which attract and allow humans to relate to canine companions on an almost human level. Dogs are like mirrors, showing an altered image of oneself. It is no surprise, then, that they make great subjects for artists.

The reception for this show will be held in the Playhouse Gallery on Friday, June 3, 2016 from 5-7 p.m.

Overture Galleries are free and open to the public.  Gallery hours: Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m., Saturday from 10:30 a.m. – 9:00 p.m., andSunday from 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.   For more information about these exhibits, please contact the Playhouse Gallery Coordinator at 608.258.4961, playhousegallery@overturecenter.com or visitwww.overturecenter.com/community/overture-galleries.
