The UW-Rock County student club The Alliance will host a Break the Silence Ball on Saturday, April 18, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Hyatt Smith Hall Commons on the campus at 2909 Kellogg Ave., Janesville. This public event will include games, music and dancing. Refreshments, including rainbow popcorn from Rainbow Confections in Monroe, will also be available.

The Break the Silence Ball will be held the day after the Day of Silence, a student-led national event that illustrates the silencing effect of bullying and harassment on LGBT students and those perceived to be LGBT, according to Tricia Clasen, UW-Rock County professor of communication and theatre arts and advisor to the The Alliance, which focuses on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues.

“Everyone is welcome at this event and the dress code is ‘be who you are’ — so fancy, casual or costume is fine,” says Clasen.

Donations will be accepted at the door for admission to the Break the Silence Ball as well as for refreshments and some activities. All proceeds will support The Trevor Project, a leading national organization that provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention for LGBT teens and young adults. For more information call (608) 758-6565 ext. 725 or email tricia.clasen@uwc.edu.
