For their second offering in the 2015-16 season, Forward Theater presents
The Flick, winner of the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Written by the up-and-coming playwright Annie Baker, this insightful and funny play will be presented in the Playhouse at Overture Center, January 28th – February 14th.
The Flick takes place in a run-down movie theater in central Massachusetts, as three underpaid employees mop the floors and attend to one of the last 35-millimeter film projectors in the state. Amidst the daily drudgery, they navigate the small triumphs and heartbreaking moments that are the substance of daily life. Issues of race, class, family, and sex underline this awkward, funny, and incredibly touching play. Praised by critics and audiences alike, The Flick is a hilarious and poignant cry for authenticity in a fast-changing world.
The fact that The Flick is enjoying a popular revival in New York at the same time it premieres in Madison is a point of pride for Forward Theater, which continues to offer relevant works not readily accessible in Wisconsin. “This play is understated and extraordinary at the same time,” said FTC’s Artistic Director, Jennifer Uphoff Gray. “Annie Baker portrays her characters so thoughtfully, with dialogue that is wonderfully nuanced. It makes for a play that is incredibly funny, empathetic, and at times, heartbreaking. I’m excited that our audiences will get to experience a work by a playwright that is receiving such well-deserved acclaim nationwide.”
The production features a talented Milwaukee-based cast, including Marques D. Causey, April Paul, and Alex Pawlowski, as well as Madison’s Alistair Sewell (From Up Here).
