Program Highlights: Radiance

Just returned from a tour in Cuba, Lonny Joseph Gordon, acclaimed Kabuki Master and director of GORDONDANCE, presents “Radiant Shaman” and a new work devised in collaboration with Kanopy Dance called “Bench, Benches, Benchmark.”

Radiant Shaman, a 50th Anniversary solo and world premiere, has been evolving for 4 years. The original music score is by the composer Thomas Powell with costumes by Hanabusa of Japan and Amy Panganiban. First shown in progress at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Texas – “Radiant Shaman” is a solo for Lonny Gordon as the last dance in the series of Radiant and Radiance, which were originally staged for Kanopy Dance Company. It is influenced by Gordon’s intensive study in the Umewaka and Grand Kabuki Theatres in Japan.

Benches Benches Benchmark a 50th Anniversary choreography project for GORDONDANCE (1968 – 2018)

“Benches” is a trilogy of three dances, created for Kanopy Dance Company. The creative materials are selected from over 200 choreographies spanning over 50 years. The work includes loco motor phrases, shapes, sounds, text and word, hand gestures, body and eye focuses, arm patterns, rhythms, stage properties, costumes, stage settings, accumulation and retrograde, appearing and disappearing, spatial patterning—-all to evoke a wondrous Springtime.

In the choreography decorative benches are used as a stage setting to suggest place, time of year, and support for our souls in and out of motion. The benches become resting, reflecting, reassuring, community and individual space, and a way-station where our energies are refocused/ refueled/ nourished and we keep on going.

Trashed Winifred Haun & Dancers
Winifred Haun & Dancers will present their highly acclaimed new work, “Trashed”. Trashed is choreographed by Chicago Dancemaker, Winifred Haun and Australian contemporary circus artist, Emma Serjeant. “Trashed” combines modern dance and circus arts to tell the story of how humans have to come to clutter their lives with too much stuff, and how it creates barriers between us.” Trashed” is highly athletic, daring and poignant.
