Racine, Wis. – The LGBT Center of SE Wisconsin will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a fundraising gala, Out in this World, on the evening of Saturday, October 19 at the Racine Masonic Center, 1012 Main Street in Racine. Out in this World—sponsored by SC Johnson— will include dinner, silent auction, live auction, program, drag show and dancing. All proceeds will support The LGBT Center and its programming and advocacy work. Members of the community are invited to participate and support the Center with the purchase of tickets.
For the past decade, The LGBT Center has served people of all sexual orientations and gender identity expressions in Racine, Kenosha, Walworth County and Northern Illinois. The Center offers a safe and welcoming environment for the community through programming and advocacy.
“Though Wisconsin was the first state in the nation to ban discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in 1982, there is so much work to be done to create the kind of welcoming and equitable community we would like,” says Executive Director Barb Farrar. “Earlier this summer, Racine became only the fifth Wisconsin city to ban conversion therapy, a practice that is condemned by national medical associations. Clearly, we have many miles to go to get to the world we hope to create.”
Through its advocacy work, The LGBT Center rallied support of the ban, organizing LGBT supporters to attend a meeting of the Racine City Council and speak in favor of the ban. Such advocacy work is one of the ways The LGBT Center serves the local community. In addition, the Center offers education and training—including Safe Zone Training—on LGBT issues, as well as support groups for teenagers, transgender people and older adults.
“The LGBT Center not only provides a safe space for people to meet and advocate, it is an exceptional community partner,” said Racine Mayor Cory Mason. “Our city is better because The LGBT Center is here, and I’m looking forward to the celebration of their first ten years in our community.”
Out in this World tickets will be available online or at The LGBT Center, 1456 Junction Avenue in Racine. Tickets for the full gala—inclusive of dinner, silent auction, live auction, program, drag show, and dancing—can be purchased for $100. Tickets for the drag show and dancing only can be purchased for $25.
